SEPARATION SPECS


There are several color separation approaches for screen printing.  Starting with spot color for simple designs to simulated process separations for a high end photographic design.  Learn a little more about each separation technique and how they differ on the press:






CAN'T PRINT HALFTONES?


To output films with the correct halftone shape generally requires a RIP Program.  The RIP Program translates grey-scale areas of a separation into the type of dots used for screen printing.  If you don't have a RIP program we can convert the dots to bitmapped elliptical halftones that can be printed from an inkjet printer like the Epson.  Please let us know if you need this conversion.



CONFUSED ABOUT ANGLES?

The rule of thumb is to generate all plates in the same sep at the same angle.  The angle number may vary with different shop preferences but as long as it is consistent for each plate in the color separation.  The only exception to this rule is CMYK Process separations.  This type of sep relies on specific angles for each color in order to create the classic rosette pattern.
SPOT COLOR SEPARATION SPECS:

LPI - 45 for spot colors / 55 for simple gradients
Angle - 45 degrees
Dots - Elliptical

Mesh Count -
  1. Base white solid plate - 180 mesh
  2. Base white halftone plate - 230 mesh
  3. Spot color plates - 180 mesh

LPI - 55-65
Angle - 45 degrees
Dots - Elliptical

Mesh Count -
  1. Base white plate - 230 mesh
  2. Square dot plates - 305 mesh
  3. Greyscale / gradient plates - 255 mesh
  4. Spot color plates - 180 mesh

LPI - 55-65
Angle - 45 degrees
Dots - Elliptical

Mesh Count -
  1. Base white plate - 230 mesh
  2. Greyscale / gradient plates - 255 mesh

CMYK PROCESS SEP SPECS:

Process seps need different screen angles then the other techniques.

1. Yellow - 75 degree screen angle
2. Magenta - 45 degree screen angle
3. Cyan - 15 degree screen angle
4. Black - 75 degree screen angle
5. Hilight white - 15 degree screen angle
6. Spot colors - 15 degree screen angle

LPI - 55-65
Dots - Elliptical

Mesh Count -
  1. Base white plate - 230 mesh
  2. All CMYK gradient plates - 255 mesh
  3. Spot color plates - 180 mesh

HAVE DIFFERENT MESHES?

The guide is to divide the mesh count by 4.5 to equal the LPI the separation plates should be output at.
